On Tuesday, China‘s Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the country and Thailand have agreed to build an economic corridor linking the two countries through Laos, according to Bloomberg News.

Wang explained during a visit to Thailand today that the corridor will start from the Thai Eastern Economic Corridor through Laos and link China’s Yunnan province, which will help transport goods to Europe.

After a meeting with his Thai counterpart Don Pramudwinai, the Chinese foreign minister added that the corridor will boost Thai agricultural exports to Chinese markets.

Wang mentioned that China aims to enhance logistics, trade, and investment to bring industrial development and economic benefits to the three countries.

On Saturday, the head of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) Osama Rabie announced that the canal recorded the highest ever daily transit rate of transiting ships, with a total of 89 ships crossing from both directions, carrying a total net tonnage of 5.2 million tons. “The number of ships transiting the canal from the north direction amounted to 44 ships with a net tonnage of three million tons, while 45 ships crossed from the south direction in the new navigational course of the canal with a total net tonnage of 2.2 million tons,” he explained. Connecting the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, the canal accounts for roughly 10 percent of global maritime trade. It is also a source of much-needed foreign currency for Egypt, which is battling crippling inflation and a currency devaluation triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The SCA has hiked passage tolls for transiting vessels, including fuel tankers, twice this year. In April, the waterway recorded its highest-ever monthly revenue of $629 million, despite the rise in oil prices due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. As Egypt reels under mounting economic pressures from the war, foreign currency reserves fell $5.5 billion between March and May to stand at $35.5 billion. Earlier this year, the SCA reported the canal’s highest annual revenue for a calendar year, netting $6.3 billion dollars in 2021, despite the coronavirus pandemic and a six-day blockage by the giant cargo ship the Ever Given.
