China has issued a stern rebuke of recent military actions in the Middle East, calling for an immediate halt to hostilities and absolute respect for Iranian sovereignty. Speaking at an emergency session of the UN Security Council on Sunday, March 1, 2026, Chinese Ambassador Fu Cong described the joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran as "boldly blatant" and warned of a catastrophic regional spiral.
Defense of National Sovereignty
Ambassador Fu Cong emphasized that the territorial integrity of Iran, along with that of all nations in the Middle East, is a fundamental principle of international law that must be upheld. He condemned the use of force as a tool for settling international disputes, asserting that such actions do not serve the long-term interests of any party involved.
"The sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity of Iran and other countries in the region must be respected," Fu Cong stated. He urged all international actors to adhere strictly to the UN Charter and avoid steps that would expand the geography of the current conflict.
Rising Civilian Toll
Expressing "deep sorrow" over the reports of significant civilian casualties following the Saturday strikes, the Chinese envoy labeled the loss of non-combatant lives as "unacceptable." He called on the military powers involved to fulfill their obligations under International Humanitarian Law and prioritize the protection of civilians.
The Ambassador specifically noted the "shocking timing" of the military operation. The strikes occurred while diplomatic channels were still active, with indirect negotiations between the U.S. and Iran underway. China argues that this military intervention has effectively undermined the political efforts that were designed to contain regional tensions.
A Call for Dialogue
Reiterating Beijing's long-standing foreign policy, Fu Cong maintained that "dialogue and negotiations are the only way to settle differences." China is now calling for an immediate ceasefire to prevent the Middle East from entering an uncontrollable "cycle of escalation" that could have global repercussions.
