China has launched the world’s first factory dedicated to producing joints for humanoid robots, marking a major milestone in the global robotics industry.
The new facility, operated by Chinese company Eyou Robot Technology in Shanghai, has an annual production capacity of up to 100,000 robot joints. The company has also said this capacity could be increased threefold in the future.
Industry analysts say the move could significantly reduce the cost of humanoid robots. According to the company’s own calculations, the cost of joints accounts for almost half of the total cost of a single humanoid robot.
Eyou Robot Technology said the factory expansion is part of a wider strategy to secure a leading market position before humanoid robots become widely available for commercial sale.
Chinese engineers previously reported in the journal Science Advances that they developed a new type of humanoid robot limb, designed using principles similar to the structure of human leg bones.
However, the scientists noted that hundreds of research and engineering teams around the world are currently working on more advanced humanoid robots.
Last year, the South China Morning Post reported that China had begun integrating humanoid robots into manufacturing production lines, signalling rapid progress in automation and robotics deployment.
