On Sunday, the African Union said the head of its commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, will travel "immediately" to Sudan, to talk to the two sides about a ceasefire, while the country is witnessing a second day of violent clashes.
The AU expressed its "deep concern" about the situation, calling on the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces to "protect civilians," according to a statement issued after an emergency meeting of the Union's Peace and Security Council on Sunday afternoon.
Fighting between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese army, which is commanded by Gen. al-Burhan, broke out in various locations across the country, including in the capital, Khartoum.
After weeks of escalating tensions between military commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his deputy, paramilitary chief Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, explosions rocked the Sudanese capital on Saturday.
