The U.S. Central Command confirmed that the planned military blockade of the Strait of Hormuz will not interfere with vessels that are not connected to Iranian ports or maritime activity.
In a statement, the command said the operation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time on Monday, and will specifically apply to ships traveling to or from Iranian ports and coastal waters.
“We will not impede freedom of navigation for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports,” the statement said, emphasizing that commercial shipping unrelated to Iran will continue to be allowed passage through the critical waterway.
The announcement also noted that additional guidance will be provided to commercial shipping operators ahead of the enforcement period, in an effort to reduce confusion and ensure maritime safety during the operation.
The clarification comes amid heightened tensions in the region and growing concern over the potential economic impact of disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy shipments.
