Tarek Amer, Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) was selected on Wednesday as chairman of Board of Directors of the Alliance of Financial Inclusion (AFI).
This came during the annual general meeting at the 2019 Global Policy Forum held in Kigali, Rwanda.
The Alliance explained that Amer will be entrusted with the responsibility of chairing the discussions on facilitating the work of the Alliance as well as the meetings of the Board of Directors and the implementation of responsibilities in accordance with the Regulations of the International Alliance for Financial Inclusion.
The alliance pointed out that Amer has succeeded in implementing reforms that contributed to transforming the National Bank of Egypt (NBE) to become the largest banking institution in Egypt and one of the largest financial institutions in the Middle East and North Africa.

The AFI noted that Amer has extensive banking experience extending for more than 38 years, where he also served as deputy governor of the Central Bank of Egypt in the first decade of this century, and worked with major international financial institutions such as Bank of America and Citigroup, which have operations in various regions of the world .
On his part, Amer said that he is proud to assume the chairmanship, stressing his keenness to expand the scope of the Alliance and its activities with all parties, benefiting from the experiences and capabilities of existing members.
Last June, Amer was named African Central Bank Governor of the Year for his successful reforms in the Egyptian banking system and his contributions through measures and decisions to support investment and economic growth in the country.
It is noteworthy that Amer acted as vice-chair for the AFI board Since 2018.
