Canada has announced new measures to restrict border crossing hours and round-trip travel for renewing temporary immigration status at 12 points of entry along the Canada-US border.
This policy allows non-Canadians to renew their temporary status by briefly crossing into the United States and then returning to Canada to confirm or renew their temporary residence status, work permit, or student visa.
Although this practice is legal, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) discourages its use as it does not guarantee the re-entry of non-Canadians who leave Canada.
US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has urged Canada to address this issue promptly, highlighting that it increases traffic and wait times at the border, impedes the smooth flow of trade between the countries, and hinders tourism.
The CBSA clarified that restrictions on "round-trip" travel hours have been imposed to allow officers to work more efficiently during peak congestion periods and to focus on other priorities such as high-risk travelers, imports, asylum requests, and other essential immigration services.
