Canada has set an ambitious new climate goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 45-50% by 2035 compared to 2005 levels.

This updated target builds upon the country's commitment to reduce emissions by 40-45% by 2030.

The announcement highlights Canada's ongoing efforts to combat climate change and align with international agreements like the Paris Accord.

According to the Canadian Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, significant progress has been made since 2015 when projections showed emissions would rise by 9% by 2030 from 2005 levels.

The ministry emphasized that the nation has successfully altered this trajectory, signaling a clear shift towards a more sustainable future.

The newly declared target aligns with Canada's pledge during the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29).

Under the Paris Agreement, participating nations must submit updated national climate action plans by February 2025, extending commitments through 2035.

In addition to Canada, other key global players like the European Union, Mexico, Norway, and Switzerland also committed to formulating enhanced emission reduction strategies at COP29.

These efforts collectively aim to keep global temperature increases within the 1.5°C threshold, a critical goal of the Paris Agreement.
