Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie said her government will refer the situation in Ukraine to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate what she described as "war crimes and crimes against humanity" committed by Russian forces.

The Office of the Prosecutor of the ICC   said it would seek the court's approval to launch an investigation into alleged war crimes in Ukraine, just days after Russia invaded its neighbor.

"We do not take this decision lightly," Jolie said in a statement issued by Canada's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. "We have repeatedly called on Russia to stop its unprovoked attacks on Ukraine and engage in a meaningful dialogue.

However, as the horrific events in Ukraine unfold before our eyes, it has become more It is now clear that more must be done."

The Canadian minister  added, "The International Criminal Court has our full support and confidence as Canada    calls on Russia to cooperate with the court."

She added that her country stands firmly with Ukraine and the brave men and women who are struggling to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
