Egypt has expressed deep concern over recent developments related to maritime coordinates and maps submitted to the United Nations concerning the maritime areas between Kuwait and Iraq, calling for full respect of international law and relevant understandings.
In an official statement, the Egyptian government stressed the importance of adhering to the rules and principles of international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and urged commitment to existing agreements governing maritime boundaries.
Cairo underlined the need to prioritise reason and wisdom, noting the strong fraternal ties and historic relations that bind Arab countries. It warned that the current developments come at a highly sensitive regional moment marked by major challenges and heightened tensions, making solidarity and dialogue essential.
Egypt also emphasised the necessity of respecting Kuwait’s sovereignty and the unity and territorial integrity of its lands, while ensuring there is no overlap with its maritime borders.
The statement reaffirmed Egypt’s full readiness to support both Kuwait and Iraq in narrowing differences and reaching mutually agreed understandings in line with international law, in a way that enhances regional security and stability.
Cairo further expressed confidence in the ability of the two countries to resolve the issue through mutual understanding, good neighbourly relations, and the strong bonds between their peoples, in a manner that preserves their interests and contributes to maintaining regional stability.
