Cairo Governorate has announced the start of maintenance work on the historic Sour Magra Al-Oyoun wall, in coordination with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the National Organization for Urban Harmony, as part of a comprehensive redevelopment plan for the Sayeda Aisha area.

The governorate also confirmed it will hold a limited auction on January 18 to dismantle and sell components of the Sayeda Aisha Bridge in the Khalifa district. The auction will be open to specialized companies with proven expertise in safely dismantling bridges, in line with technical specifications available at the governorate’s technological services center.

Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber said the bridge, constructed in the early 1980s to connect Salah Salem Road with the Sour Magra Al-Oyoun area, has long posed serious safety risks. The bridge’s steep incline, imposed by surrounding residential buildings, led to frequent traffic accidents over the years.

Despite multiple attempts to reinforce the bridge’s foundations, columns, beams, barriers, and expansion joints, the structural and safety issues persisted, resulting in numerous fatalities and earning the bridge the nickname “the Bridge of Death.”

The governor said the decision to dismantle the bridge was taken to protect public safety, especially with the availability of a safer alternative. The Salah Salem alternative axis, developed as part of the state’s road network modernization efforts, now serves as a secure replacement that improves traffic flow in the area.

The measures form part of broader efforts to enhance urban safety, preserve historic landmarks, and improve mobility in central Cairo.
