At least seven people have died following the collapse of a building in a suburb of Nigeria's capital, Abuja, according to Nigerian police. Five individuals were successfully rescued from the debris.
The building, located in the Sabon Lugbe area of Abuja, had already been partially demolished. Police officials said the structure suffered further damage due to theft by scrap metal scavengers.
Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for Abuja police, confirmed that the rescue operation took place on Sunday, with five people pulled out alive from the rubble.
Building collapses have become increasingly frequent in Nigeria. According to the Nigerian Council for the Regulation of Engineering, the country recorded 22 building collapses between January and July this year alone.
In July, a two-story school known as "Saints Academy" in Plateau State collapsed, resulting in the tragic deaths of 22 students. The incident occurred shortly after students, many aged 15 or younger, arrived at the facility located in the Bosa Buji community.
