American singer-songwriter Britney Spears is seeking to make changes to her conservatorship, which has been in place for 12 years by her father, Jamie.

In a document filed to the Superior Court of California in Los Angeles country on August 17 by Spears’ court-appointed lawyer, Spears asked to keep her father from reasserting the broad control over her life and career.

Spears stated that she is “strongly opposed” to having her father return as a conservator of her person, which gave him power over her major life decisions from 2008 until 2019, when he temporarily stepped aside, citing health problems, but was due to resume the role this year.

The court documents also added that the 38-year-old pop superstar will not be performing again any time soon.

Spears is petitioning that her temporary conservator, Jodi Montgomery, take on the role permanently.

A conservatorship is when a guardian or protector is appointed by a court to manage the life of someone due to physical or mental limitations.

In 2008, Spears was put under her father's care amid struggles with her mental health, however, she has consistently fought back against the order.

Jamie co-conservator with lawyer Andrew M. Wallet for the first 11 years of the conservatorship, but resigned in 2019, giving Jamie sole control over her life— a situation she does not want to see repeated.

He is recovering from the treatment of a ruptured colon, which Spears postponed her lucrative Las Vegas residency, and later checked herself into a health facility for a month-long stay.

The court granted Jamie to be paid around $130,000 annually by his daughter’s estate for his role as a conservator.

In 2018, the largest expense of Britney’s estate was her legal and conservator fees, which, in total, equaled over $1.1 million for that year.

Lawyers for Spears believe the action will be aggressively contested by Jamie, adding: "We are now at a point where the conservatorship must be changed substantially in order to reflect the major changes in her current lifestyle and her stated wishes.”

Spears' arrangement has been the subject of widespread online protests in recent months, with many arguing it is doing the performer more harm than good.

Spears' career choices, her personal life and her relationship with her children have all been under the control of her father in recent years.

Kevin Federline, her ex-husband, has custody of her teenage sons, with Spears premised to visit frequently.
