A groundbreaking education initiative from Brazil has received international recognition after winning the UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in education.

The Piauí Artificial Intelligence Project, developed by the government of the northeastern state of Piauí, was one of four global winners selected from 86 initiatives across more than 50 countries, TV BRICS reported.

The programme aims to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into public school curricula, benefiting more than 90,000 students each year across 540 schools. It introduces AI as a subject over a three-year period, focusing on ethics, practical applications, and the social impact of emerging technologies.

UNESCO commended the project for promoting equity and inclusion in education and for its efforts to make digital learning accessible in low-resource settings. The initiative combines in-person instruction with online tools, ensuring that students in underprivileged areas can participate in the digital transformation.

Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the award, describing it as a milestone in the country’s efforts to use technology to expand educational opportunities. Officials said the Piauí project demonstrates Brazil’s potential to lead innovative and inclusive approaches to AI education in Latin America.

The UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize, established in 2005 with the support of the Kingdom of Bahrain, recognises projects that effectively use digital technology to improve teaching and learning outcomes worldwide.
