Residents of Buenos Aires, Argentina, were shocked when the Sarande River turned a crimson red, raising concerns among residents that industries may have dumped harmful substances into the water.
The Spanish newspaper La Razon reported that the Sarande River turned this color the day before near Villa Inflamable, in the municipality of Avellaneda, home to tanneries that turn animal hides into natural leather using chemicals and other industries.
The pictures and videos taken by neighbors appeared to be from a catastrophic scene, and quickly spread on social media.
According to local media reports, this was not the first time the river had changed color, and residents in the area expressed their concerns that the color change was due to pollution.
The newspaper Pachina 12 reported that a person living near the river said: "We saw a thick, solid yellow layer on the surface of the river, which gave off an acidic smell."
The Ministry of Environment indicated that water samples will be analyzed to find out what "caused the color change."
