Black Friday is usually the last Friday in the month of November, a day that is long awaited by all shopping lovers all over the world, it is the day that follows Thanks Giving, a typical day for Christmas shopping as it has some exceptional discounts both on shops and online shopping applications like Amazon and eBay. On this day, shop operating hours are extended as they start very early or sometimes they open their doors at midnight.

The name “Black Friday “goes back to the nineteenth century, specifically 1869 when the financial crisis was a big blow to the American economy as selling and buying all sorts of goods went to a complete stoppage, goods were parked on the shelves for months, to change this, different shops offered exceptional discounts and since then it remained as an annual tradition.

Black Friday originated in Philadelphia, but why black? Simply it is a metaphor to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic that occurs on that day.

As Middle East countries including Egypt do not associate with thanks giving, hence that holiday is not observed, and as well Friday being a holy day, the black Friday branding was converted to what we call in the Middle East “ White Friday,“ similar to Black Friday in the US, in other words, black Friday runs in the western world while white Friday is offered in the Middle East and Arab countries.

What is most important is that both days are all about shopping ... shopping ...and more shopping.

Particularly in Egypt, women plan for this day and they consider it a yearly task to go and check almost all shopping malls and stores, weather online or physically. On this day, they start their journey being as early risers as possible and then march down to the shops showing tremendous demand on getting all sorts of goods, they even sometimes get goods they would not get on a usual discounted rate.

I tend to believe that the day itself becomes so inviting for the customers to get the best out of it by buying what they might need for the year ahead, this also includes their spouse, family, and friends.

I am not a shopping fan at all – I can barely accommodate crowded areas and it gives me a huge deal of stress to be going through shop after shop and floor after floor in big shopping malls. I must say, Black Friday (or White Friday) is just not my thing.

Having said that – I am wishing all the lovely ladies a shopping well done with lots of good deals to get and I will sit back and be saliently observing their interesting journey
