President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and Prime Minister of Malaysia Muhyiddin Yassin spoke via video conference on Thursday and discussed fostering bilateral relations and issues of common interest, according to Presidency Spokesperson Bassam Rady.

Rady said that Sisi and Yassin "discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the two friendly countries and addressed the most prominent issues of common interest at the regional and international levels."

The Malaysian Premier affirmed his country's aspiration to develop bilateral cooperation relations with Egypt, especially at the economic, industrial, trade and educational levels. He stressed that there is a great and remarkable development in the investment and business sectors in Egypt, which was embodied in a series of mega national projects, providing many promising opportunities for cooperation and investment. These projects aim to foster relations between the two friendly countries, he added.

For his part, Sisi pointed out to his keenness to open new horizons for cooperation with Malaysia, especially at the trade and industrial levels. Cooperation at these levels is encouraged for Egypt is the main gateway to the countries of the African continent and the Middle East and Malaysia is the main gateway to the ASEAN region.

In this regard, Rady added that the two leaders also discussed means to enhance bilateral cooperation between Egypt and Malaysia in the field of security and combating terrorism and extremist ideology. Religious education was also tackled considering the importance Malaysia attaches to Al-Azhar, a beacon for spreading moderate Islam.

Moreover, Sisi and Yassin discussed ways to enhance Malaysian investments in Egypt for mutual benefit. It was added that Malaysia can enjoy the benefits and incentives provided by the Egyptian state in this sector, especially in the automobile industry and the fields of electronics and energy.

This is to be achieved within the framework of the mega national projects, most notably the development of the Suez Canal axis and the New Administrative Capital.

During the call, Sisi and the Malaysian PM exchanged views on regional and international issues of common interest, especially the developments in the Palestinian cause and efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East.

On his part, Yassin praised Egypt’s de-escalation efforts to pacify the situation in the Gaza Strip. He also commended the efforts Egypt makes to reconstruct Gaza and to urgently re-launch the track of negotiations, leading to the establishment of a Palestinian state in accordance with the international legitimacy.

The two leaders agreed on intensifying bilateral communication between senior officials of the two countries and arranging high-level mutual visits during the coming period for further consultation and coordination- whether at the bilateral level or within the framework of international forums.
