US President Biden has launched a blistering attack on the Republican Party for inaction in the wake of the recent mass shooting in Texas that left nine people dead and called again on Congress to pass a ban on assault weapons.

The Hill, a US daily newspaper, quoted a statement issued by Biden, in which he said, "Many families have empty chairs at the dinner tables. Republican members of Congress cannot continue to face this epidemic recklessly," adding that expressing sorrow and supplication via Twitter is not enough.

A gunman opened fire in a shopping mall outside Dallas, Texas, last Saturday, killing nine people, including the gunman, seven others were wounded and taken to hospital, including three in critical condition, according to local authorities.

Biden, who reiterated his call for a ban on assault weapons after the mass shooting, also ordered flags to be flown at half mast in honor of the shooting victims from Sunday through May 11.
