The Bibliotheca Alexandrina has unveiled the “Bibliotheca Alexandrina International Award,” a prestigious global cultural and scientific accolade reflecting the Library’s historical and contemporary significance. This groundbreaking initiative aims to honor creators and institutions that have made exceptional contributions to humanity in various fields.
Award Details
Prof. Ahmed A. Zayed, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, announced the details of the Award, which carries a monetary value of one million Egyptian pounds, along with a golden medal and a certificate of appreciation. Each year, the Award will focus on a specific theme, determined by the Higher Committee of the Award. For its inaugural edition in 2025, the theme will be: “Green Technology Applications for Achieving Well-Being and Happiness for Humanity.”
The Award will recognize individuals in fields such as fundamental and applied sciences, literature, arts, social sciences, and humanities who have made distinguished contributions. Institutions that excel in the chosen theme may also be considered.
A Legacy of Enlightenment
Prof. Zayed emphasized that the Award represents the Bibliotheca Alexandrina’s commitment to fostering creativity and innovation. Drawing from the legacy of the ancient Library of Alexandria as a beacon of knowledge in the Graeco-Roman era, the Award underscores the Library’s mission to support advancements that promote global well-being and happiness.
Timeline
The nomination process begins annually in December and runs for three months. In 2025, the review and screening phase will start in April, followed by judging committee deliberations in April and May. The shortlist will be announced by the end of May, with the winner revealed during the Bibliotheca Alexandrina International Book Fair in July.
Governing Values
Prof. Zayed highlighted the values guiding the Award: inclusivity, transparency, and integrity. The judging process ensures no discrimination based on race, ethnicity, religion, or gender while fostering pluralism, creative dialogue, and respect for diverse intellectual orientations.
Application Process
Nominations must be submitted through institutions such as universities, research centers, or artistic academies. Applications require a nomination letter, the nominee’s CV, passport copy, and written consent.
