Bahrain buried today, on Friday, the body of Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the longest serving prime minister in the world, after the body arrived from the United States, where he died on Wednesday.
Al Khalifa was buried in the Hunainiyah cemetery in Riffa in a small ceremony attended by royal family members and senior representatives of the Defence Force, Interior Ministry and National Guard, according to Bahrain news agency (BNA).
Khalifa, 84, who was the uncle of King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa, had served as prime minister since independence from Britain in 1971. He passed away aged 84.
On Wednesday, King Hamad appointed Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, 51, as the small Gulf state’s new prime minister.
