On Sunday, Austria’s Chancellor Karl Nehammer called for barriers to be erected around the borders of the European Union to prevent refugees from entering the bloc.

In press statements today, Nehammer explained that in light of the high immigration numbers in Austria, the federal government is campaigning for the establishment of more walls on the external borders of the EU.

He pointed out the need to reduce a large number of asylum seekers, indicating that the EU Commission will not find it difficult to support member states in the issue of barriers at the external borders, especially on the Greek-Turkish borders, which will be very important.

The chancellor noted that some violent migrants coming from Turkey tried to demolish the fence in order to cross the border, but they did not succeed, stressing the need to support countries such as Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, and Hungary, as all of them are affected by the high migration pressures at the borders.
