Australia has advised about 15,000 of its citizens currently residing in Lebanon to leave the country, citing the potential closure of Beirut's airport and the challenges of evacuating large numbers of people if the situation worsens.
The warning comes as Israel expanded its airstrikes on Lebanon on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of at least 72 people.
The Israeli Chief of Staff also indicated the possibility of a ground invasion. Meanwhile, the UK is deploying additional forces to Cyprus to join two Royal Navy ships already stationed there, prepared to assist in evacuating citizens stranded in Lebanon.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the government has developed emergency plans, which may include evacuation by sea, though he withheld specific details due to national security concerns. In an interview,
Albanese emphasized that all options are being considered but acknowledged the complexity of the situation.
