Australia announced on Thursday a new climate target to cut greenhouse gas emissions by between 62 and 70 percent below 2005 levels by 2035.
The goal builds on Australia’s existing commitment to reduce emissions by 43 percent by 2030 and to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is expected to present the government’s updated climate ambitions at the United Nations General Assembly next week.
Under the Paris Climate Agreement, signed nearly a decade ago, countries are required to strengthen their emission reduction targets every five years.
Australia’s new pledge reflects its effort to accelerate climate action, align with international commitments, and signal stronger leadership in the global fight against climate change.
