Australia Slams Israel for Revoking Diplomat Visas

Australia has sharply criticized Israel’s decision to revoke the visas of Canberra’s diplomatic representatives to the Palestinian Authority, calling the move unjustified.

The decision by Israel came shortly after Australia barred far-right Israeli politician Simcha Rothman, a member of the Religious Zionism party within Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition, from entering the country. Rothman had planned to deliver a series of speeches during his visit.

Tensions between the two countries have escalated further following Australia’s announcement that it will officially recognize the State of Palestine during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said in a statement that Israel’s response was an unjustified reaction. She stressed that at a time when dialogue and diplomacy are most needed, the Netanyahu government is isolating Israel and undermining international efforts toward peace and a two-state solution.

On Monday, Australian Interior Minister Tony Burke confirmed the cancellation of Rothman’s visa, stating that Australia would not welcome individuals seeking to sow division.

In retaliation, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar announced the withdrawal of visas for Australian representatives to the Palestinian Authority and instructed Israel’s embassy in Canberra to scrutinize any future Australian visa requests carefully.
