Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Thursday in a joint statement with Foreign Minister Penny Wong that his country has formally recognized the State of Palestine
The government said the decision reflects Canberra’s commitment to a two-state solution, describing it as the only viable path to lasting peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.
Albanese had previously confirmed in August that Australia intended to move forward with recognition during the 80th United Nations General Assembly in September.
The announcement comes amid heightened international debate. Earlier this month, US Republican lawmakers issued an open letter warning Australia, the UK, Canada, France, and other allies of potential consequences if they formally recognized Palestinian statehood.
