August 22nd marks International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief.

It was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2019, following the adoption of the landmark resolution 73/328 on “Combating intolerance, discrimination, stigmatization, violence and acts of violence against persons based on religion or belief”.

The main purpose of this day is to remember the victims and survivors of evil acts on the basis of or in the name of religion or belief.

It also aims to provide a platform for the international community to come together and condemn religious violence in all its forms.

To mark the day, the EU plans to launch a call for proposals of € 5 million to support organizations working to promote and protect FoRB this year.

In a statement, the EU said it remains a staunch supporter of civil society organizations and defenders of freedom of religion or belief.
