The death toll from a Hindu temple floor collapse in India has risen to 35, a local official said, as rescue operations continue.

The well’s cover collapsed as the temple was full of devotees celebrating the Ram Navami festival.

The Indore District Magistrate added Friday: "35 people were killed and one person is missing. Rescue operations are still underway."

The victims fell into a well surrounded by stairs used in religious rituals, when the floor of the temple covering it collapsed under the weight of the attendees.

Earlier, Narottam Mishra, Home Minister in Madhya Pradesh state said: "The police found 11 bodies in the well, while two people died of their injuries in hospital," adding that an investigation had been launched into the incident.

Television footage showed paramedics using ropes and ladders to reach the people stuck in the well.

The temples of India were crowded yesterday with worshipers on the occasion of Hindu festival.
