A landslide occurred at a jade mine in the remote mountain town of Hpakant in the Kachin state of northern Myanmar.

The tragedy resulted in the injury of 8 individuals and the unfortunate disappearance of more than 30 others.

The accident took place in Hpakant, a town situated approximately 950 kilometres north of Yangon, Myanmar's largest city. This area also serves as the hub of the world's largest jade mines.

According to a report from the Associated Press, the local rescue team leader revealed that over 30 workers were caught in a lake as they were digging for jade when the landslide struck late Sunday evening.

He confirmed that 34 people are currently unaccounted for, and rescue teams are actively searching the lake. Additionally, eight miners who were injured in the incident have been transported to a hospital for medical attention.

This tragic event brings to mind previous similar disasters that have struck the region. In July 2020, a landslide in the same area claimed the lives of at least 162 people.

Another incident in November 2015 resulted in the tragic loss of 113 lives.
