More than 17 people were killed and over 100 people wounded in an explosion at a building in Bangladesh's Dhaka, ANI reported on Tuesday.
A local fire service official stated that the blast took place in a crowded market area in Dhaka. He indicated that the cause of the exposition was unclear, adding that the death toll could rise as rescue operations were ongoing.
"Our officers are investigating whether it was an act of sabotage or an accident," police commissioner Khandaker Golam Faruq told News Agency AFP.
Five firefighting units were rushed to the spot after the blast that occurred around 4:50 pm (local time). Meanwhile, the injured were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Police inspector Bacchu Mia told AFP that at least 45 people were taken to the hospital for treatment.
“Two of the dead are women. The rest are injured and being treated,” Bacchu Mia said while a fire services spokesperson said that no fire broke out in the building.
More than 100 people were treated for head wounds, fractures, and other injuries at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, hospital director Nazmul Islam said as per AFP.
