The bodies of at least 13 people were discovered following a shootout in the state of Manipur, where ethnic conflicts have persisted since May of last year, as reported by the Indian Express.

Security sources have stated that the Tengnoupal region, where the bodies were found, had previously not witnessed any clashes during the ongoing ethnic violence.

A security source noted, "When security forces arrived at the scene this afternoon, following the start of gunfire, they found 13 bodies, and the identities of the victims have yet to be determined."

The situation in the mentioned region has been highly tense, as migrants from the Meitei tribe have demanded the status of "Scheduled Tribe," which grants certain privileges, including preferences in government job applications and enrollment in higher education institutions, among other benefits.

This request has sparked protests among the Kuki tribe, which makes up 56% of the state's population. The tribe views this demand as an infringement on their rights.

The ongoing ethnic tensions in Manipur have raised concerns about security and stability in the region.
