Torrential rains and flooding killed at least 10 people in northwest Colombia, with several reported missing, authorities revealed on Thursday.
The flooding at Abriaqui in Antioquia department "affected a mine in the region," the National Disaster Risk Management Unit tweeted. "The preliminary toll is 10 dead, 7 missing and 10 injured," it said.
Last November, at least 11 people were killed in a landslide in Colombia’s southwestern province of Narino. The landslide occurred after heavy rains in the rural municipality of Mallama, destroying two buildings.
Landslides are common in mountainous the country, particularly during the rainy season. Houses built on hillsides are especially at risk given the imminent dangers of debris and water overflow.
