The world on Sunday observed the International Day for Tolerance, an annual UN-designated occasion aimed at promoting respect and peaceful coexistence amid rising cultural and religious diversity.
Established by UNESCO in 1995, the day highlights the principles of the UN Declaration on Tolerance, urging governments and communities to uphold dialogue, mutual respect and the protection of cultural, ethnic and religious differences.
Marking the occasion, the League of Arab States stressed the need to embed tolerance as a moral and social value rather than a slogan. The organization warned that growing levels of intolerance and hate speech worldwide make this year’s observance especially urgent.
The League said it is advancing an “Arab Declaration on Tolerance and Peace,” intended as a framework to bolster respect for diversity and strengthen efforts to counter extremism. The initiative underscores its commitment to building bridges across cultures and ensuring dignity for all.
