Under the patronage of His Excellency the Secretary-General, the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States hosted the "Solidarity for the Future" initiative to support scientific research in conflict-affected countries, held under the slogan “Scientific Research Cannot Wait,” in cooperation with the Federation of Arab Scientific Research Councils, on 17 November.
The event was attended by His Excellency the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Republic of Sudan, His Excellency the Minister of Higher Education of the Syrian Arab Republic, His Excellency the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Republic of Yemen, the Secretary-General of the National Commission for Education, Culture and Science of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, as well as representatives of several relevant Arab and regional organisations.
In her address, the representative of the Secretary-General underscored that scientific research constitutes the cornerstone of nation-building and future-shaping. She described it as the principal engine of sustainable development and the most effective instrument for addressing the economic and social challenges confronting Arab societies. She commended the “Solidarity for the Future” initiative as both a humanitarian and developmental endeavour, reflecting a spirit of cooperation and shared responsibility towards countries and communities affected by wars and conflicts. She noted that the initiative calls for rethinking the concept of humanitarian assistance, ensuring that it extends beyond human development to include institutional strengthening and the empowerment of communities to attain self-reliance.
She further highlighted the efforts of the League of Arab States in advancing scientific and technological research across the Arab region through the Arab Strategy for Scientific Research, Technology, and Innovation. This strategy seeks to support Arab researchers and scientists by fostering an environment that enables innovation and promotes the integration of scientific research with the imperatives of development and peace, thereby contributing to the objectives of the “Solidarity for the Future” initiative.
