Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit on Monday received Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun at the League’s headquarters in Cairo, marking Aoun’s first visit to the Arab League since taking office.
According to League spokesman Jamal Rushdy, Aboul Gheit welcomed Aoun to the “House of Arabs” and briefed him on the outcomes of the recent Arab Summit held in Baghdad, particularly the decision to establish an Arab fund to support recovery and reconstruction efforts in countries affected by crises.
Rushdy said the Iraqi government pledged $40 million to the fund, with $20 million earmarked to support reconstruction efforts in Lebanon.
Aboul Gheit also congratulated the Lebanese president on his recent regional visits, which he said reflect the beginning of a new chapter in Lebanon’s relations with the Arab world.
During the meeting, the secretary-general reiterated the Arab League’s commitment to supporting Lebanon through its various challenges and reaffirmed the organization’s readiness to assist in efforts aimed at strengthening state sovereignty, promoting civil peace, and achieving recovery, development, and prosperity for the Lebanese people.
