Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit strongly condemned the Israeli Knesset’s recent vote in favor of a bill that seeks to impose Israeli sovereignty over the occupied West Bank.
In a statement, Aboul Gheit denounced the move “in the strongest terms,” calling it a dangerous escalation that threatens the prospects of peace and violates international law.
“This vote reflects an entrenched policy of annexation and settlement expansion that undermines the two-state solution,” he said, urging the international community to reject the legislation and hold Israel accountable for its actions in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The controversial bill, passed in a preliminary reading by the Israeli parliament, aims to extend Israeli civil law to parts of the West Bank — a move widely seen as a step toward formal annexation.
The Arab League has consistently rejected unilateral Israeli measures in the occupied territories, asserting that such actions obstruct efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace based on United Nations resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
