Amazon.com experienced a significant outage yesterday, preventing some shoppers from completing their purchases.
Users who clicked the "Proceed to Checkout" button from their digital shopping carts were redirected to error pages on both the Amazon website and mobile app.
According to Downdetector, which monitors online service disruptions, there was a sudden spike in complaints about Amazon starting around 4 p.m. ET.
The error pages featured a standard message indicating a problem, accompanied by an image of a dog that belongs to an Amazon employee—a common placeholder used during such outages.
Downtime can be costly for major online retailers. Amazon, headquartered in Seattle, reported sales of approximately $148 billion for the quarter ending in June.
Amazon representatives have yet to respond to requests for comment on the issue. Tech news site GeekWire reported the outage earlier.
