Alexandria Governor Ahmed Khaled Hassan Saeed has ordered a reduction in fares for minibuses operating as alternative transport to the suspended Raml Tram service, lowering the ticket price from EGP 8 to EGP 5 along the Corniche route between Raml Station and Sidi Beshr.

The decision, announced Wednesday morning, comes as part of the governorate’s efforts to ease financial pressures on residents and respond to public concerns following the temporary suspension of the historic tram line.

In an official statement, Alexandria Governorate said the move reflects its commitment to engaging with citizens’ needs and ensuring affordable transportation during the tram’s development phase.

Governor Saeed directed authorities to ensure that clearly visible, officially approved fare stickers reflecting the new EGP 5 tariff are displayed on all minibuses operating along the Corniche line. The stickers must specify both the fare and route to prevent overcharging and protect passengers from exploitation.

The directive underscores the governorate’s intention to enforce tighter oversight and maintain transparency as alternative services operate in place of the tram.

Earlier this month, Alexandria began a trial suspension of the Raml Tram from February 1 to February 10, as part of preparatory works for a comprehensive development and modernization project.

During the suspension, 153 alternative vehicles were deployed to serve passengers along the tram corridor. These include 90 minibuses, 48 microbuses, and 15 buses operating between Victoria and Raml Station.

The replacement services run across three parallel routes, including the Corniche Road, Abu Qir Street, a route parallel to the Raml Tram line

Authorities have designated fixed stops to prevent random parking and congestion, with vehicles operating at intervals of three to five minutes across the three corridors.

The experimental halt from February 1 to 10 will be followed by a partial suspension phase beginning February 11 and lasting approximately six weeks, covering the stretch from Victoria to Mostafa Kamel.

A full suspension of the tram line from Victoria to Raml Station is scheduled to begin on April 1, 2026. At that stage, an additional 53 vehicles will be added to the alternative transport fleet, bringing the total to 206 vehicles to accommodate passenger demand.

The governorate emphasized that the replacement plan is designed to absorb the full capacity of tram riders within the same geographic footprint, ensuring service continuity while upgrade works are underway.
