Within the framework of the 143rd IPU Assembly currently being held in the Spanish capital, Madrid, H.E. Mr. Adel bin Abdul Rahman AlAsoomi, President of the Arab Parliament, signed a technical cooperation agreement between the Arab Parliament and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
The agreement is the first of its kind between the Union and a regional parliament.
It was signed on behalf of the Inter-Parliamentary Union by M. Martin Chungong, Secretary-General of the IPU.
The agreement aims to strengthen frameworks and mechanisms for joint cooperation in areas of mutual interest between the Arab Parliament and the Inter-Parliamentary Union, more specifically, regulating cooperation between the two sides in four main areas.
The areas are: the first: building strong parliaments and enhancing their contribution to sustainable development, the second: promoting gender equality and empowering women, the third: protecting and promoting human rights, and the fourth: combating terrorism, extremist ideology, and hate speech.
After signing this agreement, Martin confirmed that he directed the concerned sectors in the IPU to work quickly to coordinate cooperation with the Arab Parliament in these four areas to start institutional and sustainable cooperation between the two sides.
Martin added that this agreement represents a new stage and a qualitative turning point in the relationship between the Arab Parliament and the IPU.
In turn, the President of the Arab Parliament affirmed his full agreement with "Martin" on the need to expedite the implementation of this agreement on the ground.
He pointed out that the signing of this agreement came as the culmination of many steps of constructive cooperation between the two organizations over the past few months.
The President of the Arab Parliament held intensive meetings and discussions with the senior leaders of the IPU to strengthen institutional cooperation with the Arab Parliament in many areas of common interest.
