Under the esteemed patronage of Dr. Ahmad At-Tayyeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, a grand celebration will be held today at Al-Azhar Mosque to mark the 1085th Hijri anniversary of its founding.

This annual event, observed on the seventh of Ramadan, will be attended by the Deputy of Al-Azhar and a distinguished gathering of senior scholars and leaders of Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif.

Al-Azhar was established by the Fatimid commander Jawhar al-Siqilli under the orders of Caliph Al-Mu'izz li-Din Allah. It was initially conceived as a congregational mosque for the newly established capital city of Cairo. Construction began in 970 CE, and the mosque was officially opened for prayer in 972 CE. The name Al-Azhar is generally thought to be a reference to Fatimah Al-Zahraa, the daughter of the prophet Muhammad.

Al-Azhar quickly evolved into a major center of Islamic learning, attracting scholars from across the Muslim world.

Al-Azhar Mosque stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Islamic scholarship and culture. Its rich history, architectural grandeur, and continued importance make it a significant landmark in both Egypt and the wider Muslim world.
