Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, welcomed the announcement by the US President on 16 April of a 10-day ceasefire in Lebanon, set to take effect at midnight. He described this development as positive, particularly with regard to alleviating the suffering of the Lebanese people, and expressed deep appreciation for the diplomatic efforts exerted by a number of Arab states in advancing this agreement.
Gamal Roshdy, the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated that the Secretary-General stressed the importance of all concerned parties adhering to the ceasefire immediately upon its entry into force. He called for seizing this opportunity as a significant step towards initiating serious negotiations that would lead to a sustainable ceasefire in Lebanon.
The spokesperson further reaffirmed the League of Arab States' support for all decisions and measures undertaken by the Lebanese state to extend its full authority over its entire territory, in a manner that bolsters its constitutional institutions and safeguards national security and stability.
