Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit called for deeper Arab economic cooperation and urgent action on regional humanitarian crises during the opening of the Economic and Social Council’s 117th ministerial session at the League’s headquarters in Cairo on Thursday.
Aboul Gheit highlighted worsening humanitarian conditions in several Arab states, citing millions of displaced civilians in Gaza and prolonged education disruptions affecting children in Sudan. He stressed that economic and social cooperation remains the most effective path to tangible gains for Arab citizens and urged ministers to adopt practical decisions addressing development challenges.
Warning of global economic uncertainty and rising protectionism, he said Arab countries should strengthen regional integration and mutual dependence. He also encouraged greater collaboration on artificial intelligence to boost productivity while managing labor market risks.
Aboul Gheit noted that the session comes months before the end of his tenure in June, reaffirming his commitment to advancing joint Arab action and sustainable development.
