Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, received Her Excellency Ms. Fareseen Shaheen, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Palestine, at the General Secretariat headquarters on 3 September.
Gamal Roshdy, the Secretary-General’s Spokesperson, stated that the meeting addressed the Palestinian position at various levels, particularly in light of the Israeli occupation’s insistence on waging a criminal war in Gaza and obstructing all efforts to reach a ceasefire.
During the meeting, Mr. Aboul Gheit stressed that the occupation fails to grasp the extent of the international isolation Israel has brought upon itself, and that the arrogance of power and the pursuit of personal gain have blinded its leaders from sound judgement. He affirmed that Israel has already been condemned in the court of world public opinion, and that the consequences of its war of extermination—with all its inhumanity and disregard for human life—have irreparably tarnished the reputation of the occupying state.
Mr. Aboul Gheit also listened attentively to the Palestinian Minister’s vision for the next phase of political action. He joined her in calling on the US administration to reverse its decision to deny visas to the Palestinian delegation participating in the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly this September, stressing that such a decision violates international law and the Assembly Agreement, and undermines the peace agenda.
The official spokesperson quoted Mr. Aboul Gheit as affirming that Palestine is confronting a comprehensive plan aimed at abolishing the statehood project and pursuing displacement and annexation, both in the West Bank and in the Gaza Strip. He added that the Arab side firmly rejects this plan and opposes it at all levels, holding to the two-state vision and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state as the path to achieving peace and coexistence in the region.
