The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Ahmed Aboul Gheit met with China’s special envoy to the Middle East on Tuesday to discuss intensifying mediation efforts aimed at cooling regional tensions.
Ahmed Aboul Gheit received Ambassador Zhai Jun at the Arab League’s headquarters in Cairo as part of the Chinese diplomat's regional tour, which includes stops in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait.
According to a statement from Arab League spokesperson Gamal Roshdy, Zhai affirmed that his mission is focused on de-escalating current conflicts through increased diplomatic pressure and mediation.
Aboul Gheit expressed appreciation for what he described as China’s “balanced position” and its role in preventing the conflict from widening, which he warned would have "adverse repercussions for regional and international stability."
