Parliament deputy speaker Mohamed Abou El-Enein, the Honorary President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) participated in a meeting of a high-level delegation from PAM with the President of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Dennis Francis and UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

PAM High-Level Delegation participating in the meeting included Hon. Giulio Centemero (Italy), PAM Vice-President, President of the 2nd Standing Committee, accompanied by Hon. Gennaro Migliore (Italy), Director of the PAM Center for Global Studies (CGS), and PAM Secretary General.

Following the presentation of PAM activities, discussions focused on how the Assembly can further support the work of the UNGA to face current unprecedented security challenges and looming apocalyptic scenarios.

Abou El-Enein warned of the expanding conflict in the Middle East and its impact on global peace. The discussions also addressed important issues such as threats resulting from the misuse of artificial intelligence, preparations for the future summit, ongoing tensions in Ukraine, and faltering efforts to bring peace to Libya, as well as supporting United Nations peacekeeping operations in Lebanon.

This meeting comes to highlight the effective role of parliamentary diplomacy in strengthening international efforts for peace and development in the region, and to emphasize the continuing importance of cooperation between the Mediterranean Parliament and the United Nations.

President Francis stressed the role of PAM as a unique instrument of parliamentary diplomacy to keep open channels of communication and cooperation, that would otherwise be unthinkable.

Regarding the Middle East crisis, he highlighted the need for the parties to exercise maximum restraint towards de-escalation, in order to reach a lasting political solution, the only way to avoid recurring confrontations, and requested PAM to assist the UN and international community in deflating, through judgment and courage, potential risks and extensive risks nourished by propaganda and radical narrative.

PAM reiterated its steadfast support for immediate critical peace negotiations, release of all hostages, protection of all civilians, and future reconstruction in Gaza and OPTs.

Discussions also encompassed the ongoing PAM/UN cooperation on threats posed by the malicious use of AI, preparations for the Summit of the Future, the ongoing Russian illegal invasion of Ukraine, and the stagnating national reconciliation efforts in Libya, and support for UNIFIL operations.

The discussions also centered on security scenarios affecting the Mediterranean regions and tackled several critical issues including the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the need for comprehensive regional political solutions.

During the meeting, Guterres emphasized the key role of the Parliamentary Diplomacy of the Mediterranean Parliament in supporting and strengthening international peace and development efforts in the region
