Egypt's Minister of Planning and Economic Development Hala El-Said attended the launch of J-PAL's Clean Air and Water Labs.
The labs target tackling pressing air and water challenges in Africa and the Middle East by fostering collaboration between government stakeholders, J-PAL regional offices, and associated researchers.
In her address at the 'Partnership Development for Climate Adaptation in Arab States' conference held in Cairo, she emphasized the importance of climate change adaptation, which is hindering beneficial development efforts in Arab countries and the developing world.
El-Said also highlighted Egypt's efforts to increase the proportion of green public investments, allocating around EGP410 billion for mitigation and adaptation to the effects of climate change in the 2023/2024 investment plan.
The event was also attended by a number of ministers, heads of international institutions, and regional and Arab organizations such as Egypt's Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sewilam; UN Climate Change High Level Champion for Egypt, UN Special Envoy on Financing 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and Chairman of the Jury of the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects, Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin; and Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Social Sector at the League of Arab States, Haifa Abu Ghazaleh.
