Officials and local media reported on Saturday that a fire broke out in a shopping mall in Karachi, southern Pakistan, resulting in the deaths of at least 9 people.

The blaze ignited early Saturday morning at the multi-story RJ Shopping Center in Karachi, Pakistan's most populous city.

The fire department successfully rescued about 50 individuals, but there are reports of more people still trapped inside, according to Reuters.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab Siddiqui confirmed in a post on social media platform X that at least 9 bodies had been transported to local hospitals following the fire.

"The search operation is ongoing," he added, indicating that rescue efforts were continuing.
