On Sunday, the roof of a church collapsed in Tamaulipas, Mexico, resulting in the deaths of at least nine people, with dozens still trapped beneath the debris, according to state authorities.

Local television station "ADN 40" quoted Jorge Cuéllar, a spokesperson for state public safety, stating that 10 injured individuals have been rescued so far, while rescue workers continue the painstaking task of lifting the rubble.

Cuéllar added that the cause of the church of Santa Cruz roof collapse in the city of Matamoros could be attributed to a structural failure in the building.

Mexican authorities further revealed that the incident occurred during a Sunday mass, leading to injuries to approximately 50 other individuals.

Rescue workers continue to search the wreckage late into the night, in the hope of finding survivors and potential further casualties.

The Tamaulipas state police reported that around 100 people were inside the church at the time of the collapse.
