A devastating tragedy occurred off the coast of Mauritania, resulting in the deaths of 89 migrants after their large traditional fishing boat capsized on Monday, July 1.
The Mauritanian Coast Guard recovered the bodies about 4 kilometers from the city of Inal.
A senior local official, who requested anonymity, confirmed the recovery operation, stating, "The Mauritanian Coast Guard successfully retrieved the bodies of 89 migrants who were aboard a large traditional fishing boat that ran aground."
The Coast Guard managed to rescue nine survivors, including a five-year-old girl. According to statements from the survivors, the boat departed from the border between Senegal and The Gambia with 170 passengers on board, leaving around 72 people still missing.
