Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni announced the death of about 54 Ugandan peacekeepers as a result of an attack by Al-Shabaab extremists on an African Union military base in Somalia.
"We discovered the bodies of 54 soldiers who were victims of the accident," Museveni said - in a tweet, France 24 reported.
The death toll is the largest so far since the pro-government forces backed by African Union forces known as the "African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia" launched an offensive against the extremist "Al-Shabaab" movement last August.
Last week, The militants drove a car laden with explosives into the base in Bulo Marer, 120 kilometres (75 miles) southwest of the capital Mogadishu, leading to a gunfight, local residents and a Somali military commander told AFP.
