Dozens of armed men raided a village in northwestern Nigeria, killing at least 50 residents and kidnapping a tribal leader and several women and children. They exchanged fire with local soldiers and policemen in Kebbi state.

The militants forced the security forces to retreat and burnt shops and grain silos and stole cattle.

The men entered Dankade village in Kebbi state on Friday night and exchanged gunfire with soldiers and policemen, local elder Abdullahi Karman Unashi told Reuters.

"They killed two soldiers, one police officer, and 50 villagers. (They) kidnapped the community leader of Dankade and many villagers, mostly women and children," Karman said.
